The first operation in Poland without stiffening the spine of a child with scoliosis was carried out on Monday at the University Children's Clinical Hospital in Białystok. This method allows the patient to return to physical activity in six weeks. An 11-year-old girl was operated.
Surgical correction of idiopathic scoliosis with an innovative technique without stiffening the spine, so-called ASC (Anterior Scoliosis Correction), an 11-year-old girl from Bialystok was subjected. The operation was carried out by orthopedists from the Orthopedics and Traumatology Clinic of the Medical University of Białystok, dr Paweł Grabala and Dr. Tomasz Guszczyn, and world-renowned surgeons of the spine from the United States, Dr. Darryl Antonacci, of the Institute for Spine and Scoliosis (New Jersey) – said the Medical University of Bialystok.
So far scoliosis has been performed in children, implanting them with the so-called scoliosis rigid rods that could be adjusted with the control pilot. The child with such rods, however, was stiffened, the method with flexible rods is different, the patient is not stiffened, flexible rods do not need to be replaced. Dr. Antonacci explained that when a flexible rod has an implanted child who has already stopped growing, he immediately has a straightened spine to eliminate scoliosis, and when the rod has a child who is still growing, the spine straightens to the implanted rod during the child’s growth.
