Do you need spine surgery?

Barbara V – 54 – May, 2011…

I was sixteen when I found out I had scoliosis. I was fitted for a brace that went from my neck down to my hips which I wore for two years. After that I was told that the degree of my curve did not require surgery. Life went on. I got married, had four children and a very busy and active life.

At the age of 45 I started having back pain and just thought it was natural as you get older. As each year went by the pain got worse and I noticed I was leaning more and more to the right side. By the time I was 53, the pain was so bad that it interfered with every day life.. I could not even stand long enough in the morning to blow dry my hair without resting in between. Every day tasks such as cleaning, cooking, working and exercising became very painful.

I decided to see a doctor. He took an x-ray and told me that I had scoliosis. I told him I was diagnosed with it when I was 16. He told me I had progressive scoliosis and that my curve measured between 70 degrees and 80 degrees. I tried physical therapy and many different medications. I was then told that he could not help me because my only option at this point was surgery and he did not know of any doctors that performed scoliosis surgery on adults. I was told to go home and get my affairs in order. My scoliosis would keep progressing and I would lose the use of my legs and be in a wheel chair. I was devastated. I sought out several other doctors and got the same story from all of them. I was not ready to accept that.

I decided to do some research on the internet hoping to find someone to help me. That is where I found Dr. Antonacci. I called and got an appointment within two weeks. When Dr. Antonacci walked in the room and started talking to me and told me that he could help me I felt like I had finally had hope. He explained the surgery to me and told me that I could take my time and make up my mind whether or not I wanted to have the surgery. I told him I didn’t have to think about it. I had no doubt in my mind that he knew exactly what he was doing and was very good at it. He was very knowledgeable and kind and made me feel at ease. I was ready to schedule my surgery. I went and talked with Joel, his assistant. He has the patience of a saint. He spent at least an hour with me explaining the surgery and recovery and answered every question I had in his very kind and compassionate manner. After seeing Joel I went to see Chris at the front desk who took care of scheduling my surgery and working everything out with my insurance company. You will always get a smile and warm welcome from her.

I had my surgery on October 5, 2010 and it was the best decision I ever made. I was back to work in 5 months. I now live every day to the fullest and pain free. I forgot what that was like. Thank you Dr. Antonacci for giving me my life back. I thank God every day that I found you. I would highly recommend Dr. Antonacci to anyone.
