Read This Young Woman’s ASC Testimonial
My name is Eliana, I am 12 years old and I was diagnosed with scoliosis in September of 2014. My pediatrician sent me to an orthopedic surgeon who told me I needed fusion surgery. He talked to us about the complications and possible problems later on in life and I was terrified. He said it was major surgery with recovery time lasting sometimes a year. He said I probably wouldn’t be able to dance again but this was my only option.
I told my Mom and Dad (Read Mother’s Testimonial) I didn’t want to do it and they agreed. After that, I tried a brace and Schroth Therapy but neither worked. My back started hurting when I ran and I was getting nervous that I was going to have to have fusion. Luckily, my Mom found the Institute for Spine and Scoliosis. She told me that they perform a surgery called ASC that did not involve rods. I was so excited that there was a possibility that I could be normal again after the surgery.
When I met Dr. Betz and Janet I was super excited to learn that I was an excellent candidate for double ASC. It was cool that they talked to me and not just my Mom. Dr. Betz and Janet made me feel like my opinion was important. They answered the questions I had, like, could my Mom stay with me in the hospital, and what will my scars look like? They were both so nice, and trustworthy. I was ready for this surgery. ASC was a perfect option for me, and Dr. Betz was very confident he could correct my scoliosis.
I don’t remember anything about the surgery because I was asleep but everyone said I did a great job and Dr. Antonacci, Dr. Betz, and Dr. Cuddihy got an excellent correction. My curves went from 59T/56L before surgery to 18T/16L after surgery. A few days later while I was still in the hospital I was worried because I had some numbness, and weakness in my leg. Dr. Antonacci came in and examined my leg. He explained everything about my muscles and nerves and reassured me that I would regain all of the strength in my leg. He was right! My leg is fine now. I knew I could trust him!
Six weeks after the surgery we went back to the Institute for Spine & Scoliosis for a post-op check-up. Everyone was there and we all celebrated! Dr. Antonacci said my spine looked awesome. Dr. Cuddihy told me I was a great healer and my scars looked amazing. Dr. Betz told me to have fun on my upcoming ski trip! Everyone was so happy for me. I couldn’t believe I didn’t have to worry about my back anymore. That day I went swimming and I have been back to normal ever since.
Scoliosis really stinks but I am so pleased I went to The Institute for Spine and Scoliosis. They corrected my curves and they took really good care of me. Now I only think about my back when it is time for a check-up. I am so grateful for everything they have done for me. Everyone at the Institute for Spine and Scoliosis is really caring and kind and I recommend them to anyone and everyone who has scoliosis.
